It was a shocker to learn that Drew Spencer, Great Britain’s inspirational head coach, had resigned his position to concentrate on his New York Yankees career.
Drew stepped into huge shoes trying to replace the seemingly irreplaceable Liam Carroll, but he proved up to the job as an exceptional motivator and an excellent tactician. Great Britain’s successes in Regensburg, Phoenix, and Brno ensure that the name Drew Spencer will forever be held in the highest esteem in British and European baseball.
Our emotions are split. Of course, we want Drew to continue to excel in the Yankees organisation and fulfil his every ambition, but we are sad. We love the guy, but his departure has knocked the wind out of our excitement for next year’s World Baseball Classic.
British Baseball Federation/BSUK wasted no time in issuing a job vacancy advert; after all, it is only 48 weeks until GB face Mexico in their first game of the World Baseball Classic. And we have the European Championship before that in September.
This is the most gilded of golden opportunities. The two previous GB head coaches are now thriving in two of the most prestigious organisations in sport. You would imagine that this is the dream job for every coach within the Great Britain baseball organisation.
However, based on the content of the job advert (posted below), the net is being thrown wider, trying to encourage a more established name to lead the team.
Let’s not forget that Bruce Bouchy took charge of the France national team for the WBC qualifiers in Regensburg in 2022. It was a magical moment for GB to inflict the 10-run mercy rule against Bochy’s France as Drew Spencer’s team progressed to win the tournament and book their place in the WBC 2023.
Spencer drilled belief into the injury-impacted GB roster in Phoenix, and their sheer tenacity secured the win over a far more experienced Colombia team in a crucial pool game. This priceless victory contributed to GB automatically qualifying for 2026’s blue riband event.
If France can encourage a three-time World Series-winning manager to take charge of WBC qualifying, you can see why the brain boxes in BBF and BSUK are setting the bar high. There cannot be too many ex-managers who would not like a shot at taking on the USA and Mexico in what will be the greatest World Baseball Classic of all time.
Bruce Bochy’s next job after the French gig was manager of the Texas Rangers, with whom he won his fourth World Series. Maybe that should be in the job advert, but it isn’t, this is…
