Videos emerge on social media of Aston Villa fans fighting with Celtic fans caught in the home end on Wednesday night.

There were trouble in outside of the stadium and in the stands when Celtic fans were found in the home section of Aston Villa’s Villa Park during the Champions League match.

The situation escalated into physical confrontations, with reports and footage showing Villa fans actively engaging with and attempting to remove Celtic supporters from their seats.

The presence of Celtic fans in the home end was against the strict warnings issued by Aston Villa and West Midlands Police, who had emphasised that tickets for home areas were for Villa supporters only.

The club had even threatened sanctions against their own fans for ticket reselling to away supporters. The police had also warned about counterfeit tickets, indicating that anyone caught with fraudulent tickets would likely be arrested.

This event has been widely discussed online and in media, highlighting ongoing issues with fan segregation and ticket management at high-profile matches. The tension and violence underscore the need for robust security measures and better coordination between clubs, local law enforcement, and UEFA to manage fan behaviour and ensure safety at football matches.

A West Midlands Police spokesperson said: “There were minor incidents of disorder in both the home and away sections of the stadium.

“A small number of arrests have been made for a variety of offences but the vast majority of fans were well behaved and enjoyed the game.”

There were fighting in the stands, leading to some fans falling down a flight of stairs before being ejected.

Scuffles were spotted in some other areas of the stadium. with one male laid on the steps after a fall, another was seen standing over him to throw a numbers of punches and then appeared to aim a kick to his body before following up with more blows.

Police had said in a statement before the game with a warning issued to Aston Villa fans over ‘counterfeit tickets’.

West Midlands Police said 2,400 tickets were officially been sold to away fans, however concerns had been raised over “counterfeit tickets circulating”. The force, who sent a “clear message”, said it did not want fans to “be caught out”.

Supt Jack Hadley said: “We’re used to dealing with large events including high-profile football matches and have a plan in place to allow fans to enjoy the game safely and keep the wider public safe.

“We are anticipating a large number of people coming into the city and we want everyone to enjoy what it has to offer. Although we are not anticipating any issues, officers will deal with anyone not behaving as expected in a positive manner.

“Anyone behaving anti-socially can expect to be dispersed from the city, and anyone committing criminal offences can expect to be arrested.” He added: “We have worked very closely with AVFC as well as transport colleagues at Transport for West Midlands, Highways England and also emergency services in preparation for the event.”

Fans also clashed before the Champions League fixture as a flare was launched as fans were making their way to Villa Park.
