Goalscorer Regan Linney gives his first sit down interview as fans praise Carlisle for making the ‘outrageous signing’
Regan, who netted 25 times last season and made the National League Team of the Season, expressed excitement about joining Carlisle, citing the club’s size, fan base, and manager Mark Hughes as key factors.
He credits his previous manager at Altrincham, Phil Parkinson, for transitioning him to full-time football from FC United.
Regan, who started at Bamber Bridge after being released by Preston, describes himself as a hard-working, direct striker who thrives on scoring goals and playing for fans.
Despite interest from Football League clubs, he chose Carlisle for the challenge of helping return the club to the Football League, emphasising his commitment to the team’s success.

CARLISLE STATEMENT:
Carlisle United Football Club are delighted to announce the signing of Regan Linney from Altrincham FC for an undisclosed fee.
Linney, 28, arrives at Brunton Park on a three-year contract after scoring 25 goals for the Robins in the 2024/25 season.
The Preston-born striker started his career at Bamber Bridge where he broke into the first team aged just 17.
FC United of Manchester signed him for an undisclosed fee in 2019, where he went on to make 97 appearances and scored 40 goals.
In his two-and-a-half seasons with Altrincham, he made 93 appearances and scored 44 goals.
Head Coach, Mark Hughes said: “We’re delighted Regan has joined us. We’re really impressed with him as a player, he obviously had a big season last year and scored a lot of goals.
“We like the way he goes about his business, he’s got flexibility which is important and he can play down the middle or from the left, and he scored a lot of goals from that position last season.
“We’re getting him at the right time in his career, he’s got real drive to continue his progression, we’re excited that he is joining us on our journey.”
Head of Football Operations, Marc Tierney said: “We are absolutely delighted to bring Regan to Brunton Park.
“He’s a prolific forward who plays with real intensity. Most importantly, he’s a player who will give everything for the shirt, and that’s exactly the type of character we want at this football club.
“We believe he can make a big impact here and we’re excited to see him get started.”

Speaking to CUTV about how excited he was to be at Brunton Park, Regan said: “It’s a special feeling. Obviously, when I heard Carlisle were interested in me, it’s a big thing.
“The fans, the club, it’s massive. I’m really delighted to be here.”
On what made this the right challenge for him, he said: “It’s how big the club is. Obviously, the gaffer as well. Mark Hughes as gaffer, it’s obviously massive. It’ll pull a lot of players to the club. Mark Hughes is a massive name and, obviously, if I can learn one or two things off him, then I’ll be grateful.
“But it was also the fan base, the club, everything around the place, and it works for me location-wise as well. So, everything comes hand-in-hand, really, and I’m really delighted to be here.”
Having worked with Marc Tierney last season, he asked if he had played a big part in getting the move done: “He’s made it easier, hasn’t he? He’s made it a lot easier. Marc’s a good guy. “
Having scored 25 goals last season and being named in the National League Team of the Season, Regan said: “It’s obviously a big achievement. I really enjoyed my time at Altrincham, so I just want to say that as well. Thank you to them, especially the gaffer there as well, Phil Parkinson.
“I was at FC United, leagues below this and he’s given me the opportunity to go into full-time football and progress my career on. So, I’m really grateful for him and, obviously, Altrincham as a club as well. But, it’s time for a new challenge.
“I’m ready for a new challenge now and, obviously, Carlisle have come along and what I want to help now is get the team back in the Football League. It’s time to hopefully kick on and get this club back where it belongs.”
On his career so far, he said: “I was at Bamber Bridge. I started there at 17 after being released from Preston. I ended up going to FC United after a few years and did well there towards the end of that. Then I obviously ended up at Altrincham and here I am now.”
Asked to describe himself as a player: “I wear my heart on my sleeve. I work extremely hard. Obviously, scoring goals is massive for a striker. That’s what you’re paid to do. So I do that, and I’m very direct. I can also play out wide if needed. I just love playing in front of fans.
“Fan bases are massive for me because that’s what I play football to do. To play in front of fans and make people smile. So, that was a massive pull for me as well.”
He continued: “I’ve accepted the challenge here. There was, obviously, interest from Football League clubs but I love a challenge.
“The aim, like I’ve said a few times now, is to get this club back where it belongs. This is a Football League club and it should be there. So, it’s time to obviously get the hard work started and get ready to go.”
ALTRINCHAM STATEMENT:
Altrincham FC can confirm that Regan Linney has today completed a transfer to Carlisle United.
Regan remained very much part of our plans for the upcoming season, and it was never our intention to sell. However, following growing interest over the summer, we received offers from a number of clubs in the Football League. During this period, Regan made clear his desire to pursue a move and specifically pushed for the opportunity to speak to Carlisle United.
We were clear that no permission would be granted for any discussions until an offer was received that met both our valuation and provided the right structure for Altrincham FC. Only once these conditions were satisfied did discussions progress.
While we are naturally disappointed to lose a player, retaining someone who was ultimately determined to leave would not have been in the best interests of the dressing room or the club. The decision to accept the offer was made in full consultation with Phil Parkinson, and he will now be fully backed with the necessary budget to replace and strengthen the squad ahead of the new season.
Really happy to sign for this massive club. The journey continues
Can’t wait to meet all the fans. Big season ahead
