Chant sung about Manor Solomon, by Leeds fans, causes controversy with own supporters
CLUB STATEMENT:
Leeds United again condemn the football chant containing an anti-Palestine lyric aimed at Manor Solomon, having already done so through comment to local and national media outlets in December.
Hate crime and discriminatory language or chanting is not acceptable at Leeds United and the club has a zero-tolerance policy towards discrimination abuse of all kinds.
The club has received a large number of complaints from Leeds United supporters regarding the chant and had hoped the initial strategy of condemning it through the media and working with supporter groups, would prevent this from happening in the future, but it has sadly become more prominent in recent matches, including at Elland Road.
After monitoring the situation at recent home games, the origins of the chant at Elland Road appear to come from the Norman Hunter South Stand, particularly in blocks FA5, FA6, SS5, SS6.
As a result, there will be an increased CCTV surveillance and stewarding presence in FA5, FA6, SS5 and SS6 at all home games between now and the end of the season and action will be taken against any person who participates in the chant, including the issuing of a club banning order.
Discriminatory language can be reported by contacting your nearest steward or discreetly via the Matchday Incident Text Service by texting LEEDS and your message to 60006.
Given what is at stake for the club in the weeks ahead, this is a time we need the fan base to be united, not divided.
Thank you for your co-operation.
The FA and the Football League are both thought to be aware of the chanting, with Leeds warning the supporters they could be breaking the law over the ‘unacceptable’ tragedy chanting.
‘Discriminatory language or chanting is not acceptable and supporters could be breaking the law,’ said a Leeds spokesperson months back.
‘The club condemns this behaviour and has a zero-tolerance policy towards discrimination abuse of all kinds.
‘Tough measures and sanctions are in place across all English football leagues to tackle illegal behaviours within football grounds, and this involves but is not limited to, discriminatory behaviour and tragedy chanting.’
Twitter users reacted as Leeds United again condemn a chant aimed at Manor Solomon after making headlines…
@poppy_swift: It’s not even hard to fix, just change the last line and then every fan can enjoy a great chant. It’s that simple
Could be
‘and he’s running down the line’
or as other clubs use
‘and he’s scoring all the time’
@OliJacobs4: What about the Jimmy Saville songs sung by 91 Football Leauge clubs? Also are we allowed to boo opposition players or is that against the law?
@sanandreas_wong: I see the people who are mad about this are suddenly fine with politics in football. If you’ve even an ounce of awareness you’d know why the line in question is political
@ZSJaved123: Thank you @LUFC. Fans should support the player but calling out this chant was the right thing to do.
@italiananglopod: Predictably comments are an utter shit show, loads of “footy lads” claiming it as “banter” and the “woke” ruining football “It’s a joke”, the usual keep politics out of football shite while they run around with Farage stickers But fair play for the club addressing it
@AntonyCarlHiggs: Knew this would happen the minute we signed him I would say just change the last lyric to ‘and he’s scoring all the time’, but sounds like the club will just shut down anyone singing the song all together rather than just the Palestine lyric. Shame. #lufc
@skipperjenkins_: fair play. this is a proper, proper statement. good on the club
@leedsnoinfidel: Proper statement. Well done. And the ones that are mad are the typical “keep politics out of football” crowd. Every single one of you are cowards. I hope you realise how stupid you are one day
@_RB_Ash: Good decision. I haven’t liked the fans on here that hate Solomon because of his views he’s entitled to have. People get mixed up in a war that doesn’t concern them. Then you’ve got the fans that sing that chant which isn’t great either. Keep politics out of football. #LUFC
@SamFrain90: It’s distasteful fair enough but the offensive line is that he hates a country. That’s not hate speech. It’s not even that offensive. Not wanting it to be chanted, fair enough. but bans?? Actual bans? That’s absolutely mental.
