A huge blow for Sheffield Wednesday this week as the EFL issue punishments to the club and Dejphon Chansiri ahead of the 2025/26 season.
The Owls faces spending restrictions for the next three transfer windows due to late wage payments to staff last season.
The EFL has charged the club and owner Dejphon Chansiri for these delays, which exceeded the allowed 30 days in March and May.
The club is under a registration embargo, barring new signings, including free transfers, until wages are fully paid, with an exception if the senior squad drops below 23 players.
The club plans to appeal the sanctions, which cover this summer and both 2026 windows.
Chansiri apologised for the delays, and local MP Clive Betts has called for him to sell the club, accusing him of holding it “hostage.”

EFL STATEMENT:
The EFL can confirm that Sheffield Wednesday Football Club is now subject to a three-window fee restriction after exceeding 30 days of late payments between 1 July 2024 and 30 June 2025.
In accordance with EFL Regulations, the restriction will cover the entirety of this summer’s window and two full windows thereafter (Winter 2026 and Summer 2026).
The Club has notified the EFL of its intention to appeal this decision and this will be heard in due course.
Separately, on 3 June 2025, the EFL issued charges against the Club and owner Mr Dejphon Chansiri in respect of non-payment of Player wages in March 2025 and May 2025. This matter is being considered by an Independent Disciplinary Commission, and because of the ongoing proceedings, the League is unable to comment further at this time.
Sheffield Wednesday also said on Wednesday morning: “Sheffield Wednesday acknowledge the statement below issued by the EFL on Wednesday morning and confirm the club’s intention to appeal:
“The Club are also unable to make any further comment at this time.”
It comes after their first statement of the morning: “The club can confirm that this year’s Owls in the Park will not take place as planned.
“The postponement for 28 June follows discussions with the relevant local authorities.
“Wednesdayites can be assured that our popular community event will return and the whole team thank you for your continued support.”
Sheffield Star journalist Joe Crann tweeted the day before: “Understand that conversations are underway that could well see Owls in the Park cancelled by Sheffield Wednesday at very short notice due to safety concerns. Local authorities are giving their advice.”

Here’s how fans reacted to the huge blow for Sheffield Wednesday as the EFL issue punishments to the club and Dejphon Chansiri…
@clurrrrxhx: Dejphon, you are the worst kind of human being out there, you’re an evil spineless man. We will never forgive you for this, just f*ck off and never come back. The games up
@swfccom: Chansiri, you will never ever be forgiven by us. You are vile piece of shit. You put peoples livelihoods in jeopardy & all you give is an apology & you continue to chuck dirt on this club’s grave every single day. You are the worst kind of human roaming this world
@therealtbailey: On what grounds can you even consider appealing??? Absolutely disgraceful. Our once proud football club and it’s reputation has been destroyed by one man. We will never forgive you for this. Just the sell the club and let us have something left to support.
@jordan_rosey: Does anyone who’s clued up in these matters know if we can actually lodge a successful appeal? Not sure what leg we have to stand on tbh
@steveward1984: Hasn’t got a pot to piss in anyway, unless he sells we can’t sign anyone regardless so embargo is irrelevant. Can’t pay the staff already there. Absolute scum of the earth.
@barton6435: So no comment on late payments nothing about what’s happening, nothing from the owner. Absolutely shambles just lock the gates and put us out of our misery
@aroundgroundsss: Think the blokes got a cheek. He knows the rules, you can’t pay players when you feel like. Or has he done it so he literally can’t pay transfer fees ? Get the window ban = saves him cash. I’m just thinking out loud here. #swfc
@1867Logan: get rid of the owner instead of punishing the fans players and staff!!!!! he wants this ban so he doesn’t have to buy any players and can just focus on scraping the wages money out every 3 months!!
@CazParker1871: Needs to be disqualified as quickly as possible.
@MattOwl29: I think the independent commission due to exceptional circumstances needs to fast track a forced sale on him. Otherwise he will drag this out until the end and us supporters suffer greatly!
@chrismcclure86: An absolute disgrace. It’s going to be tough in the short term but we will always have a club. Chansiri doesn’t win in any shape or form long term. This will bring everyone together. The chips are well and truly down
@Hayd_is_back: Come on @EFL. It’s time to disqualify Chansiri. Hitting the club won’t hurt him. It’s the fans and staff who suffer. Have you not learnt anything from the debacle at Reading? #SWFC #ReadingFC
@Danworth2509: Do something about it and help us get rid of Dictator Chansiri
@jwalker0502: Literally sheds no light on the situation once again, pointless statement…
@swfcLwood: What grounds do we have to appeal?! The wages still haven’t been paid!!!
@Gleadyy: What are you trying to appeal? Your inability to run a club? Your lack of money? You’ve done what you can, you’ve run your course. It’s time to cut your ties; sell the club before there is no club.
@benjimbrown: Why are you considering appealing absolute shambles this club that so many thousands love has been turned into a hobby project for someone who hasn’t got a clue how to run a football club, He’s run us into the ground and it’s not even over yes as he is still our owner JOKE!!!
