It’s a further blow for Sheffield Wednesday as reports state that an ‘agreed’ takeover with an unnamed consortium collapses.
The Star report that the club continues to face an uncertain future as the new season approaches, facing financial difficulties, including embargoes, a three-window fee restriction, a managerial saga and unpaid debts to players, staff, HMRC, and other clubs.
A potential takeover by an unnamed consortium, which had reportedly reached an agreement with owner Dejphon Chansiri.
It’s understood that it was suggested to key figures at the club that a sale was drawing closer, and even for a time stalled Djeidi Gassama’s move to Rangers, as the potential new owners tried to keep him at Wednesday.
But now the takeover deal is thought to have ‘collapsed’, ‘stalled’, ‘fallen by the wayside’.
Understand that any progress regarding the #SWFC deal that was deemed acceptable by Dejphon Chansiri has completely stalled, with that proposed takeover – from a consortium whose identity remains unnamed – now believed to have fallen by the wayside.https://t.co/MbBVibUvH8

Despite the latest setback, other parties remain interested in acquiring the club.
The recent sale of player Djeidi Gassama has at least provided funds to settle some debts, but concerns persist about the club’s ability to meet upcoming wage obligations and lift the embargo and wage cap.
Fan confidence in Chansiri’s leadership has significantly eroded, and the club remains in crisis, with hopes pinned on a successful takeover to secure its future.
It comes as no surprise that a whole host of youngsters are among the seniors for Sheffield Wednesday’s pre-season training squad.
As things stand #SWFC have a squad of about 17 players who can be considered as first team players… So it’s no surprise to see a whole host of youngsters among the seniors at the moment. https://t.co/6ipCN670yv

It includes several from their U21s, such as Reece Johnson, Rio Shipston, and Bailey Cadamarteri, due to the club’s lack of first-team signings amid a managerial uncertainty and embargo restrictions.
The Star adds that with only 17 first-team players, including youngsters, and key players like captain Barry Bannan still out of contract, the club may rely on youth for their opening match against Leicester City on August 10th, 2025.
The team has a behind-closed-doors friendly scheduled against Mansfield Town on July 26th and the Owls recently defeated beat Man City’s U23s 3-2. More run-outs are expected.
This is how Twitter users reacted to the further blow for Sheffield Wednesday as an ‘agreed’ takeover with an unnamed consortium collapses…
@jamieswfc3: Just another day at the circus, I hate Chansiri more then I hate blades and it’s not even close anymore
@MrPaulPashley: Imagine this!! Who would have thought.. Surely DC is easy to do deals with..
@_JoeDavison: It’s never going to happen, is it?
@shez_1991: Pitch invasion at kick off before stoke at home. Dont let em kick off.
@davo33uk: And all these ITKs have been played good and proper … he’s no plans to sell .. never has .. he’s too deep … it’s like someone with a gambling habit hoping for their next big win that never comes … RIP SWFC it’s been a rollercoaster 58 years but thanks for the great memories
@smitmaz: This is terrible news for Sheffield Wednesday and their fans. That man has ripped the heart out of a fantastic club i’m a Sunderland fan and have always had the upmost respects for their fans and players. I hope a solution can be found soon.
@Duff1867: I cannot imagine how soul destroying it is reporting on this – probably as soul destroying as reading it
@Jamie_Hodder21: Looks like #SWFC are at the “William Storey offer” part of their Saga. Bidding more than the clubs worth to make the original owner think that’s what they can get! #ReadingFC
@HistoryPegg: Hey DC please please put #SWFC into administration. You’ve screwed us into the floor we’ll take our chances thanks. You’re destroying the club now to the point it’s no chance to recover. Do the right thing. Please bugger off and leave us alone. A concerned fan. #wawaw
@0liverHeath: I love my football club…….. gah. Oh well, I can buy a new SEVENTY-TWO POUND shirt to console myself. It’ll be one to treasure. To remember our relegation season by (if we even start the season that is). #swfc
@johnellison: Chansiri will have to be forced out, there are no bidders, like I’ve said many times before, real business people will never pay for a dying business when it can be snapped up for nothing when it finally fails. Fans will be keeping the clown here this season by buying merch.
@_Brian1867:
Rest In Peace, Sheffield Wednesday Football Club
1867-2025
@Jed_swfc: He’s literally laughing at us and meanwhile you’ve got fans telling other fans if they don’t buy the shirt it’s their fault the staff don’t get paid. I’ve lost all hope in this club I really have #swfc
