Police issue a statement after a video emerges of some disorder that took place before the Cardiff v Bristol City game on Saturday.
South Wales Police speak out following reports of disorder before the Championship fixture, saying there had been were incidents involving football fans near the junction of St Mary Street and Wood Street in Cardiff.
Mounted police and specialist public order-trained officers swopped in to take control of the situation.
The statement adds that while a derby fixture naturally carries a highly charged atmosphere, a minority of fans seek to engage in disorder.
The police responded quickly to stop any such incidents. A policing operation was put in place to ensure that supporters from both teams could leave the stadium safely after the game. Footage has since been posted online…

South Wales Police said it was “aware of some incidents of disorder”.
“A derby fixture such as this always comes with a highly charged atmosphere,” it said, in a statement.
“Unfortunately, there will always be a minority that will seek to engage in disorder but officers are responding quickly to stop any such incidents.
“A policing operation is in place to ensure both sets of supporters can leave the stadium safely following the match.”
Wales Online wrote about how there was “chaos” in Cardiff city centre with a bus being attacked and damage being caused. One eyewitness said “stay away from town” because it is “full of riots”.
Police said they are “aware of some incidents of disorder” that took place.
Missiles had been chucked at the pub and smash as police try to regain control while another video shows police trying to keep the large group of football supporters separate from what appear to be Cardiff fans outside the Prince of Wales pub.
One witness said: “Football fans are hitting our bus as they go past, a masked one just booted the door of the bus that we are on. He’s cracked the glass. Bus driver has some sort of radio telling all buses to avoid town centre.”
Matt Thomas, who had been on a bus to Pentyrch with his young son, r as a “swarm” of recalls what he saw.
“I would say there were around 100 of them and police with truncheons were trying to guide them down Westgate Street,” he said. “One of them hit the door and the glass smashed. We were quite shaken up.”
Cardiff Council leader Huw Thomas has thanked the police and said there are “no ongoing issues” in the city centre.
He said: “Whilst it’s disappointing to see the behaviour of a handful of idiots, there are no ongoing issues in Cardiff city centre, and no reason to stay away. I’m told the incidents occurred around 10.30am – grateful to South Wales Police for dealing with it swiftly.”
Police planned for an operation to be in place for after the game.
Police said a man has been arrested for a public order offence in connection with this disorder.
Police have said that an operation was in place to get fans away from the stadium safely.
The game ended 1-1 with Yousef Salech’s third goal of the season grabbing a very late points fro a point for Cardiff City in the 104th Severnside Derby with Bristol City.
Cardiff manager Omer Riza:
“I thought we played quite well. We just need to be a little more threatening at times and we made life hard for ourselves with the goal we conceded.
“To go 1-0 down and show the character to take a point is really important. We have to be happy with a point because every point is valuable.
“It’s important to take every point whether you’re top or bottom of the league.”
Bristol City manager Liam Manning:
“I’m frustrated, disappointed to concede so late. The lads were quite honest as to why, the difference away from home in the way we manage the game.
“We were relatively comfortable but the one time we switched off we got punished. The big bit for me is taking more care of the ball. How do you take the sting out of it?
“We’re hugely frustrated. I feel for the lads a little bit because they left it all out there. The schedule has been ridiculous. It becomes neglectful on the players when you cram in so many games.”
