Sam Allardyce gives his reaction to bizarre mural of him eating chips in his hometown

Sam Allardyce gives his reaction to a bizarre mural of him eating chips in his hometown of Dudley in the West Midlands.

A 10ft mural of Big Sam, depicting him eating Black Country orange chips, appeared on a wall in Union Street, Dudley.

It is thought to have been put up on Wednesday, with the artwork since sparking now just local attention, but national headlines, and some residents comparing it to the work of Banksy.

The 70 year old is much loved by some locals, which they say the mural puts the area “on the map.”

However, not all reactions were positive it would seem, with one nearby worker calling it “weird” and suggesting it be removed. Orange chips, a local delicacy, are battered with turmeric or paprika for their distinctive colour.

In a video message, he said to ITV News: “Just seen the mural that has been sent of me in Dudley, my hometown. Absolutely privileged to be honest with you, I thought it was a very good likeness.

“Chips look a bit hot, but I really enjoyed seeing it. Whoever did it, thank you very much!”

Trevor Wilkes took a photo of the artwork whilst he had been walking through the town centre on Thursday, July 17),

He said to BirminghamLive the paint was “still wet when I saw it”.

Resident Scot Simmons said: “How did he do it without anyone seeing? Did he just put it up in a couple of minutes? Is he trying to remain mysterious?”

Fellow Dudley resident Andy Smith said: “Local lad eating orange chips, what more do you want?

“There is a genuine Banksy in Birmingham, perhaps this is Dudley’s answer to Banksy.”

Mr Simmons added: “Looking at it you don’t know how good it is till you come down and see it.

“It’s put Dudley on the map. Big Sam, immortalised here, yeah it’s brilliant.”

However, one man who worked nearby was not impressed.

“Who is it? It’s just weird, it doesn’t make sense and it needs to go,” he said.
