A Plymouth trialist goalkeeper scores a ‘humiliating’ own goal in a pre-season friendly defeat against Eintracht Braunschweig.
According to Plymouth Herald, that man was former Fulham player Luca Ashby-Hammond, a routine pass back to Ashby-Hammond led to a mis-hit clearance that rolled into his own net, resulting in a 1-0 loss.
Those watching via a live stream at home posted footage of the goal, with it goes viral on social media.
The 24-year-old, who never played for Fulham’s first team but had loan spells at Aldershot, Crawley, Notts County, and Gillingham, was released by Fulham last season.

Argyle head coach Tom Cleverley said about Ashby-Hammond: “We held an open training session today that he was at so I don’t think I’m releasing any secrets. He’s someone who will play for us tomorrow. You will see him in a more public environment.
“I have been pleased with him in training. He has not played too much senior football but is someone who has impressed in training this week. Let’s see how he does tomorrow.”
There were also penalty appeals, the woodwork struck and chances, as can be read in Plymouth Herald’s report.
Meanwhile, Cleverley is ‘really pleased’ with the quality within the squad, with nine new signings from both before and after he was appointed as head coach on June 13th, though feels that more depth needed to be added to it.
Asked for an update on further recruits, Cleverley said, per Plymouth Herald: “There is probably two or three more still to do. Probably two that you would say would be in the (starting) 11, and we all know the number nine shirt is still available. I don’t think there is any secrets about that one.
“So we are working hard towards that. There has been conversations this week. With the sort of tough fixtures we will face in the first eight games you would like that to happen as soon as possible, but these things aren’t always that easy.
“I have been really happy with the progression in such a short space of time of Bim Pepple and Owen Oseni. They are doing great and are developing, and whoever does come in in that position I’m sure those two will be pushing them all the way.
“I don’t think everyone is looking for the same type of nine. Some people like the big focal point, some people like the on-the-shoulders, some people like the technical ones that come towards the ball.
“We have a profile of a nine that we are looking for. We have highlighted two or three that are on our shortlist and we are all working hard for one of those to materialise.”
On the size and quality of his squad as it stands now, Cleverley said: “Very pleased with the quality. The character is excellent. The way they can take on information.
“The quality I have been really pleased with and we feel like we will develop that and develop that. There is a nice group of three or four players who are under-21s who are on the fringes that we feel like we could develop in six to 12 months to say they are first team players week in week out.
“The depth, I would say we are two short. That will happen. I think the early business the club has done, either before I was appointed or after I was appointed, has been excellent.
“Without putting too much pressure on there is some exciting players that I’m hoping the fans see throughout pre-season. It has been a really good window so far.
“It was all about getting people who didn’t want to be here or part of this next part of the journey out the door and sort of cutting out those distractions, without sounding too disrespectful towards those players, some of them have been great servants, and bringing in a fresh energy and a real hungry group, which I can see already.”

@DanHarvey74: When did Plymouth sign Bachmann? #watfordfc
@Blu3army1899: We’ve somehow managed to be bigger clowns than Cardiff in pre season
@newensgtfc: Nice calm finish. Didnt panic.
@EFan1967: Can we buy your goalkeeper? He is a better striker than every “striker” in our team.

@GCascadeC: Everyone’s cussing out the trialist. What I want to know is why is galloway playing a ball back to him like that? A chipped skim ball across the keepers body and onto his weaker foot. He’s left footed too you’d think he’d remember. Proper stich up. #pafc
@jackolesliepafc: Let’s be honest. A professional goalkeeper should be able to control a simple ball. It’s an absolutely horrendous mistake. But it’s not the end of the world. If we’re going to be playing out from the back. Expect plenty more awkward balls being played into the GK.
